Deadpool & Wolverine Review

I’ll start by saying that I’m a casual Deadpool fan. After the “X-Men” franchise left me wanting more from the character, I finally decided to dive into the “Deadpool” movies. My friend insisted they were a must-watch, so I obliged. The films had their share of hilarious moments, but I suspect I would have appreciated them even more if I’d known about Deadpool’s comic book history beforehand.

The shock factor hit me hard during the first movie, but I enjoyed the second installment once I learned about the irreverent and fourth-wall-breaking character. It was still shocking but in a delightful way.

When I heard that Deadpool would be joining the Disney family and crossing over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU); my excitement went through the roof. As a Marvel film lover, I'm curious to see how this R-rated antihero would fit into the more family-friendly Disney landscape. Of course, the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine sweetened the deal – that man is a masterpiece from the neck down!

On a Saturday morning, I eagerly settled in to watch the latest Deadpool installment. Little did I know, the intro alone would be pure entertainment gold. The creative genius behind the callback to a six-year-old comment, followed by an epic fight sequence/dance routine, left me grinning from ear to ear. Bravo!

“Deadpool & Wolverine” starts with a bang right from the get-go. Major props to Nick Pauley, the young man who busted out a N’Sync dance to “Bye Bye Bye.” The entire theater was buzzed with excitement – and trust me, that energy set the tone. I knew right then and there that this movie wouldn’t disappoint.

This brilliant Easter egg reference to an X-Men movie from 21 years ago. Imagine this: In X2: X-Men United; the X-Mansion comes under attack by William Stryker’s strike team, and the students scramble to escape. Wolverine takes charge, guiding Rogue, Pyro, and Iceman to safety in Cyclops’ car. As they speed away, Pyro cranks up the music. Can you guess which song? The same tune that Deadpool hilariously dances to on Logan’s grave! And yes, Logan despised that song. Quite the amusing connection!

Fast-forward to 2018. Wade Wilson (played by the ever-charismatic Ryan Reynolds) uses Cable’s time-travel device to leap from his timeline (Earth-10005) to Earth-616 – the “Sacred Timeline.” His mission? To join a group, specifically the Avengers. But alas, rejection awaits him.

Six years later, we find Wade as a retired masked mercenary turned used car salesman. His love life? Not so great. Enter the Time Variance Authority (TVA), crashing his birthday party. Mr. Paradox offers him a spot on Earth-616, revealing that his world is crumbling after the death of its stabilizing “anchor being,” James Logan Howlett (aka Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine). Paradox aims to use the Time Ripper to snuff out timelines, including Wade’s.
But this is Deadpool we’re talking about – plans rarely unfold smoothly. He returns to the TVA with a Logan variant, only to discover it’s the worst Wolverine in the multiverse.

Meanwhile, Paradox has gone rogue, pulling shady moves under the radar. A heated disagreement leads to Wade and Logan getting pruned into the Void.
And what a Void it is! Mutant variants galore, surprise cameos from forgotten characters, and the pièce de résistance: Charles Xavier’s twin sister, Cassandra Nova. She’s been stuck in the Void since infancy, and let’s just say she’s a force to be reckoned with – the most powerful being in that chaotic realm.

Our dynamic duo – Wade and Wolverine – leap into a portal just as Paradox fires up the Time Ripper. Cassandra catches wind of his destructive plan and arrives via another portal. Her goal? Wield the Time Ripper to obliterate all timelines, leaving only the Void behind. Cue an epic battle with an army of Deadpool Variants – action-packed and peppered with comedic gems.

Paradox drops a bombshell: messing with the Time Ripper’s power flow equals instant death. But hey, when you’ve got two mutants as conductors, no worries! And speaking of cinematic gold, that shirtless Wolverine moment? It’s etched into my screensaver – no joke!
Oh, and keep an eye out for the sly digs at Century Fox and Disney. Plus, the mid-end credit scene? Hilarious. Overall, the attention to detail in this movie? Perfection. As someone who wasn’t initially sold on the whole Deadpool series, this film has me itching to rewatch the first two. Now I’m fully onboard!

Now, let’s breakdown the rating my Squirrel friends:

3 acorns for the overall movie – respectable.

1 bonus acorn for that epic intro – it hit harder than an acorn falling on your head during a windy day!

A ½ bonus acorn for the shirtless scene – because, let’s be honest, that’s the real superhero reveal.

And finally, another ½ acorn for the Calvirine (Henry Cavill) my boyfriend in my head.

Drumroll, please… 5 out of 5 Acorns!
