Kidnapped by a Killer: The Heather Robinson Story Review

 

Lifetime and true crime—two things that have been a winning combination for decades. There’s just something about their over-the-top dramatics, exaggerated suspense, and those signature “based on a true story” twists that keep me coming back. Kidnapped by a Killer was no exception. It pulled me in, kept me invested, and delivered the kind of chilling, tension-filled storytelling that Lifetime does best.

The movie follows the terrifying ordeal of young single mother Melissa (played by Chloe Ray Warmoth), who finds herself in the crosshairs of a dangerous man after witnessing a crime. Warmoth does a solid job portraying the desperation and courage of a woman fighting for her life in an impossible situation. Then there’s Brandon, played by Kearran Giovanni, the detective determined to crack the case and bring her home safely.

But let’s talk about Steve Guttenberg. If you grew up watching Police Academy, it might be hard to picture him as anything other than the charming, goofy Mulhoney. Well, forget all that—because in Kidnapped by a Killer, he is downright creepy as John Calhoun, the ruthless criminal at the center of the story. His unsettling presence and unhinged demeanor make him a genuinely terrifying villain, proving that Guttenberg can step far, far away from comedy when needed.

The true events behind this film are based on John Edward Robinson, a notorious serial criminal known as "the Internet’s first serial killer." Robinson preyed on vulnerable individuals, manipulating them through deceit and false promises before committing horrific crimes. After years of investigation, he was ultimately caught and sentenced to life in prison, ensuring he could never harm another victim.

Was this movie a little dramatic at times? Of course! But that’s exactly why I watch Lifetime. They know their audience, they know their formula, and they never fail to deliver gripping, guilty pleasure thrillers.

If you’re in the mood for suspense, survival, and just a hint of that Lifetime flair, Kidnapped by a Killer is a solid pick. It keeps you on edge, makes you root for the heroine, and reminds you why Lifetime remains a go-to for dramatized true crime stories. I enjoyed every moment, and if you love movies based on true events, this is one you should definitely add to your watch list. I give this movie 3 out of 5 acorns.
