Rescued by Ruby Movie Review

 

Rescued by Ruby is one of those heartwarming gems that sneaks up on you when you're least expecting it—like when you're doom-scrolling through TikTok and suddenly find yourself emotionally invested in a shelter dog and a state trooper. Based on a true story (which already earns it bonus points in my book), this Netflix film delivers exactly what you'd hope for: a lovable animal at the center, a determined human partner, and yes, a few tear-jerking moments that will have you reaching for the tissues.

Grant Gustin plays Daniel O’Neil, a Rhode Island State Trooper with big dreams of joining the K-9 search and rescue team. He’s got the heart, the drive, and just enough awkward charm to make you root for him from the start. His partner in crime—or rather, in rescue—is Ruby, a high-energy shelter dog who’s been adopted and returned more times than a bad Christmas gift. Ruby is portrayed by two real-life rescue dogs, Bear and Shiloh, and they absolutely steal the show with their expressive eyes and boundless energy.

The supporting cast adds warmth and depth: Kaylah Zander plays Melissa O’Neil, Daniel’s supportive wife, while Camille Sullivan brings a quiet strength to Pat Inman, the shelter worker who believes in Ruby when no one else will. Scott Wolf appears as Matt Zarrella, a seasoned officer who helps guide Daniel through the rigorous training process.

What makes this movie stand out isn’t just the adorable dog antics or the feel-good ending—it’s the way it captures the bond between human and animal, especially when both are considered underdogs. Ruby isn’t your typical K-9 recruit, and Daniel isn’t your typical cop. Together, they prove that heart and determination can outshine pedigree and protocol.

So yes, you’ll probably cry. But you’ll also smile, cheer, and maybe even consider adopting a shelter pup of your own. Rescued by Ruby is a sweet reminder that sometimes, the best partners come from the most unexpected places.
